radio...

Wordy-Gurdy' is a monthly review segment on Helen Jennings' show Roots of Rhythm on PBS 106.7 FM in Melbourne, Australia.

For well over 25 years PBS-FM has been a beacon of independent, freeform, passionate and unpretentious radio. PBS champions specialist and underrepresented music; announcers love music and volunteer their energy, musical knowledge and vast record collections to prepare in-depth, specialist, music-freak programs. Find out more.

From its inner-city studios, with a small core of staff and an army of dedicated volunteers, PBS broadcasts 24 hours a day to the wider metropolitan area of Melbourne and beyond, and streams live to the world here on the web. Programs are available on demand (windows media player required).

On the show, we start at blues and jazz and work outwards to find weird and wonderful connections in music, whether new releases or from the last hundred years. I’ve been reviewing CDs, DVDs, festivals and gigs in print since the1990s and on Roots of Rhythm since 2005. See playlist 2005 (.pdf 48.3kb), playlist 2006 (.pdf 40kb), playlist 2007-08 (.pdf 54kb), See 2009 playlists on the blog within 24 hours of the show, and preview upcoming shows the week before. ‘Wordy-Gurdy' goes to air on Helen Jennings' show Roots of Rhythm on PBS 106.7 FM Melbourne, on the third Wednesday of the month, 9:30–10am, beginning 21 January 2009.

editing...

The best thing about editing a music mag is, not surprisingly, the music, but in roots music an equal pleasure is in knowing the people who make it and work around it because they love it – the musicians, designers, writers, photographers, promo people, publishers, fest directors and volunteers.

What do editors do? Find out here

Here are some of the issues we put together in my role working with Inmedia as Associate Editor of Rhythms: Australia 's roots music monthly as well as Editor of the annual East Coast International Roots & Blues Music Festival program.

writing...

From door bitchin' to just plain bitchin', from promoting musos to emoting about 'em, the music scene has always played lead for me in some key or other. Dammit, even temping on reception at Rocket Records in London in a far-off time. From the early days of pub rock in Melbourne Australia to Associate Editor of Australia 's national roots music magazine, there's always been something about roots music, that wondrous amalgam fusing the genres of blues, jazz, country and world.
